The Rise of Tuesday as Peak Gym Day

If you are heading to the gym on a Tuesday, you are not alone.

Tuesday is officially Britain’s favourite workout day, accounting for 17% of all gym sessions. Scotland leads the charge here, logging more Tuesday visits than England and Wales.

At the other end of the week, Sunday lags with just 10% of sessions, making it the least popular day to train. The pattern suggests that many gym-goers prefer to lock into their routine early in the week — building momentum rather than scrambling to squeeze in a last-minute Sunday sweat.

Functional Fitness and HYROX Reign Supreme

When it comes to classes, across England, Scotland and Wales, functional fitness continues to dominate the group exercise landscape, with HYROX sessions ranking high among the nation’s favourites. The appetite for high-intensity, performance-driven formats shows no sign of slowing down.

The Gym Group remains the largest HYROX National Training Club in the UK, reflecting sustained demand for structured, competitive-style training that builds strength, endurance, and resilience.

Britain’s Fittest Region Revealed: The West Midlands

If we are judging by gym visits alone, the West Midlands comes out on top.

The region records the highest average monthly gym visits, with more than 25,000 visits per gym, making it the most active region in Britain.

But it is not just about workout frequency. According to The Gym Group’s Gen Z Fitness Pulse Report, the West Midlands ranks three percentage points above the national average for members who exercise to meet new people.

This highlights a clear regional trend: in the West Midlands, fitness is as much about social connection as it is about physical results. With more people using the gym to build friendships and expand their social circles, the region stands out as one of the UK’s most socially driven fitness communities — where workouts double as valuable connection time.

How Location Influences Workout Habits in the UK

For many, fitness starts the day, with the Southeast leading the way as home to the UK’s earliest gym-goers, who favour sessions between 4am and 9am.

By comparison, Wales emerges as the hub for evening workouts, with members most likely to train after 5pm.

That focus on later training aligns with a strong wellbeing culture in the region. Among Gen Z members, over 60% cite mental wellbeing as a key benefit of exercise, placing Wales above the national average for wellbeing-driven motivation. For many Welsh gym-goers, fitness is not about physical gains — it is a vital part of supporting mental health.

London Sets the Pace for Workout Duration

When it comes to workout duration, Londoners are leading the way. Members in the capital spend an average of 70 minutes per gym session — the longest in the UK — highlighting a clear commitment to longer, more focused training.

That dedication is even more evident among Gen Z Londoners. Only around 11% skip the gym entirely in an average month, while roughly one in five attend four or more times per week. These high attendance rates, combined with extended session lengths, position London as a standout region for gym engagement and workout consistency.

The data reinforces London’s reputation as home to some of the country’s most committed gym-goers — where longer workouts and frequent training sessions are the norm rather than the exception.

Community Spirit Shapes Fitness in the Northeast

In the Northeast, fitness is more than a solo pursuit — it is a shared experience. The region shows the strongest appetite for group fitness classes, with Circuits emerging as the most popular format. Community-led training clearly resonates here, reinforcing the social side of working out.

Motivation among Gen Z members in the Northeast is equally telling. Over 56% say improving mental health is a key driver for going to the gym, while 52% are focused on building muscle or toning up — around six percentage points above the national average.

This combination of wellbeing-focused fitness and strength training ambition highlights a powerful regional trend. In the Northeast, strong community engagement goes hand in hand with clear performance goals, creating a gym culture built on both mental resilience and physical progress.

A Healthier Nation in Motion

From Scotland’s Tuesday trainers to Wales’s wellbeing-focused evening sessions, 2025’s data shows a nation embracing fitness in ways that reflect their goals, lifestyle, and motivation.

Whether it is HYROX-fuelled intensity, early starts in the Southeast, social sweat sessions in the West Midlands, or community-driven classes in the Northeast, one thing is clear: Britain is not just working out more — it is working out with purpose. Fitness is no longer a trend. It is a movement reshaping everyday life.
