How to use a Treadmill

Treadmills we’ve all seen them, but do you actually know how to use one properly? Treadmills are a great machine for simulating walking or running outdoors, helping to improve cardiovascular health, endurance, and overall wellness. Like with any piece of exercise equipment, however, it’s important to know what you’re doing in order for your workout to be safe and effective. Keep reading to learn all about how to use the beloved treadmill.

How to Use a Treadmill: Top Tips

All brands and makes of treadmills are different, but there are a few general rules to know before stepping onto any of them.

First of all, you should always learn the basics of your specific type of machine, whether that’s at the gym (ask a staff member) or at home (check the instructional manual or look it up online). You don’t want to get stuck on a high speed and not know how to slow things down, for example. There’s no need to utilise every gadget and gizmo, but the basics are key for safety and enjoyment.

Like with traditional walking or running, it’s good to warm up before hopping onto the treadmill. This not only gets your heartrate up, but simple stretches (like lunges, squats, and toe touches) will improve your flexibility and help prevent injury while on the treadmill.

Most treadmills come with a safety clip, which you should always use. Attach it to your shirt or the loop in your shorts or trousers. It acts as an emergency braking system—if it’s pulled from the treadmill, the belt stops immediately. This is vital in case you lose balance and can help prevent trips or falls.

Finally, don’t forget to do some cool down exercises after your walk or run to help relax your muscles. Lunges and quad exercises are a good transition from running to rest, and doing a few hamstring exercises will help prevent stiffness and improve flexibility.
