Why Gen Z are planning holidays around fitness

For many of us, holidays have traditionally been a time to switch off, relax, and perhaps indulge a little more than usual. But for Gen Z, the definition of a “perfect getaway” is evolving, and fitness is taking centre stage.

Recent research commissioned by The Gym Group reveals a clear shift in how younger adults approach travel. Instead of being something that you pause while away from home, fitness is now becoming a key part of the holiday experience itself.

Fitness-first travel is on the rise

According to the research findings, nearly a third (30%) of adults aged 18 to 29 “always” or “often” plan their holidays around their fitness goals. In fact, one in 10 said access to a nearby or onsite gym was more important to them than good weather.

Almost half (47%) say fitness influences their holiday decisions more now than it did five years ago. For a generation known for prioritising wellbeing, this trend feels like a natural progression.

  • Jenni Tardiff, Master Trainer at The Gym Group, explains:

"It’s clear there is a shift in how younger generations combine fitness and travel. Holidays are no longer just about rest or over-indulgence—they’re an opportunity to stay active, set new goals and experience something different.”

Movement as a way to explore

For Gen Z, intense training sessions aren’t replacing sightseeing while travelling. Instead, fitness is becoming a way to experience destinations more fully.

  • 44% believe running 10k or more is one of the best ways to explore a new location

  • 46% choose swimming while travelling

  • 38% enjoy long walks

  • 25% still make time for gym workouts while on holiday

Whether it’s a sunrise run along the coast or a long hike through a new city, movement is becoming part of the adventure.

Why staying active matters on holiday

The motivations behind this trend go beyond physical fitness. Our research found the main reasons Gen Z like to work out on holiday include:

✔ Improving mental wellbeing (33%)

✔ Feeling refreshed and energised (21%)

✔ Maintaining a sense of routine (19%)

  • Jenni adds:

“For many young people, it’s about feeling good, staying grounded in familiar routines and using movement as a way to get more out of their time away.”

For many, access to a gym or workout space is now an essential part of the travel experience, helping them to make the most of their travels and feel their best.

From retreats to races: the new holiday goals

Fitness-focused holidays are also becoming more popular, with 42% having already taken a trip centred around exercise. These include:

  • Fitness retreats (20%)

  • Races (16%)

  • Events like HYROX (12%)

Those who take these trips spend around £335 per year on average, and often combine them with other experiences like sightseeing (37%) and cultural activities (29%).

A new way to holiday

What’s clear is that fitness holidays are becoming a way to feel your best, stay energised, and experience more of the world through movement.

  • As Jenni puts it:

“Whether it’s a long walk, a swim or a local gym session, exercise has become a way to enhance a holiday break.”

And while your destination might change, your routine doesn’t have to. Whether you’re exploring a new city abroad or enjoying a staycation closer to home, building consistent habits before you go makes it easier to stay active wherever you land.
