Eat right and sleep tight
4 March 2013
HEALTH: Snoring is a common condition that has a tendency to worsen with age. If you're a habitual snorer, you not only disrupt the sleep patterns of those close to you, but you also impair your own sleep quality. Researchers have found that when spouses take action to reduce chronic snoring, both partners' quality of life improve significantly.
EXERCISE: Those carrying extra weight (particularly around the neck) or with poor muscle tone are especially susceptible to snoring, so try upping your exercise routine. Aim for at least three cardio sessions and two strength training sessions each week; this will help to strengthen muscles all over the body whilst also helping to regulate your weight and sleeping patterns.
NUTRITION: A food and symptom diary is a useful tool as it can help you to establish whether any aspect of your current diet may be exacerbating the problem. Dairy products and rich, fatty foods can lead to congestion in the airways and are particularly common snoring triggers, so it might be useful to reduce your intake of these foods (particularly in the hours before bedtime) in order to assess whether this helps to reduce snoring severity.
We look forward to seeing you at The Gym soon!
